BIRD WATCH POINT IN COMMUNITY PARK

My name is Sandor Nagy, also known as DJ Sandoors or the creator behind Sandoors Short Films.
I was born in Budapest Hungary in September 1968. In my country, I had a nice young life with lots of time out in nature. I have always had farm animals, and my father taught me how to keep, kill and prepare the animals that we ate.
I was an active hunter in Hungary and an active guard to save nature. I always have had a bird feeder at home and built a deer feeder in the forest. When I was young, I just walked in nature to watch the wild birds and animals.
I came to the US in 1999 to make a new chance in my life. It was just an accident to come to Savannah, GA for work, but later I found here more connection and stopped looking for a better place. I found my wife here. My main job is construction work. At the same time, I’ve been a musician and the past three years making short films and documentaries.
I always try to save my time to practice music or work on a creative project. I like to bike ride and rode 8000 miles in the past 3 years. When I’m biking, I hear the natural sounds like birds singing.
My wife and I live at Red Gate Farm, which has been an Audubon site for bird watching in the past. There are water birds, red tail hawks, woodpeckers, GA bluebirds, owls and many more species. Every night we walk and listen to nature when day turns to night.
I saw a bird blind during a trip to Crooked River State Park in July of this year (2009), and you can see my film of that at this link on my youtube site. I recorded the Painted Bunting there. This gave me the idea to put forward a proposal with the county for a bird blind at Lake Mayer. The County park officials were very receptive to my idea, which you can see at the link http://birdwatchsavannah.blogspot.com They did mention that to carry forward to the next level, I would need the support of an established group, like Audubon.
Most people have no time or inspiration to focus on small things and relax, listening to birds singing. A busy bird feeder area at Lake Mayer can help focus and inspire people to remember the little bird population. This place will show people how to watch closely, while seeing a bird in a more natural habitat.
I would like to continue to take care of the bird feeder, and looking at creatively building the project. I like showing my idea to the community. I hope this will bring respect for birds and good feelings for the people.
If you watches the video of the bird blind that I made, you will get an idea of the structure that I would like to see. I think this would be a big help and inspiration for people to bird watch in Savannah.

Thank you for your interest. You can call me for more bio information at 655-6128.

THE FIRST HEAVY DUTY BIRD FEEDER

The bird watch point at Lake Mayer now has its first bird feeder. I spent about 20 hours and 200 dollars or so making this original model and set up on post. It's made to last with rustic tile for easy clean-up and waterproof materials. It's 2'x4'x2' and weighs about 140 pounds because tile is heavy.
This is to inspire people and draw birds to enjoy the feeder. I hope the birds and people like it.

Thanks to Wild Birds Unlimited for sponsoring the project with two bags monthly of their "fine dining birdseed."

BIRD GARDEN /LAKE MAYER SAVANNAH

THE BASIC PLAN

Goal: To create a community bird watching point and bird blind.
Goal: To bring focus to the smaller bird species of Savannah.

This bird watch point and bird/butterfly garden will be the first registered community public bird feeder complex with blind house in Savannah. This can help bring attention to urban birds and be an observation point for bird watching.

The planned location is at Lake Mayer, in the back area, where the forest is more isolated from the noise from the Truman Parkway. The land is suitable for building up the blind house, and can be separated from through traffic with a friendly looking fence. Also, this area is out of reach from the big population of pigeons at Lake Mayer. It would be created and maintained to attract smaller bird species.

The blind house would be located on the canal shore, and most of the feeders located on the other side of the canal. The bird garden keeper can cross the canal on a little crossing bridge, and can close a security gate behind him, when finished with the job of refilling the feeder and bird bath, or cutting the grass.

The blind house material would be strong treated wood-logs on the sides and platform deck, and have a concrete floor.
The platform deck (on which the bird blind is built) would be 3-4 feet up from surface, so it’s safe from the changing water levels in the canal.
The blind house is planned with 6 windows and 1 door, with no glass. The sidewalk surface material will be compressed sand that’s separated with garden log from the main soil and lifted up. The sand makes less noise as visitors walk into the blind house and that way won’t scare away the birds from the feeder.

The bird garden needs security and a visiting plan what can work out with the park manager or the Police.
We can make web site with a “bird cam” or blog and donation plan.
One possibility is having a membership system, where each visitor has a registration card. This would keep the blind house from becoming a play house or hiding place.

THE PROJECT CAN BEGIN IN STEPS, IF THE FUNDING IS SLOW TO COME IN.

• Once the City/County gives the permit to start the program, the first step is the build a fence and gate to cordon off the bird garden area from through traffic. This also secures the construction site as a safety measure to prevent accidents.

• As the next phase of funding comes in, the bird feeders can be set up, and the design plan posted on the information board, to generate more interest in the project. This can lead to additional donations for building materials.

PROJECT PLAN (as funds come in)
1. Build the Fence with gate and an information board with leaflets about the project. Cost of materials is $ 600.
2. Set up bird feeders at a cost of about $ 250.
3. Build the sidewalk and stairs at a cost for materials of $ 400
4. Build the deck floor with concrete for the blind house at a
cost for materials of $ 600.
5. Build up the blind house at a cost for materials at $ 1500.
6. Build small bridge to cross the canal. The cost of materials is $ 300.
7. Fix up the inside of the house. The cost of materials is $ 300.
8. Later add more bird feeders, with bath, and seed at a cost of $ 500.

Total estimated cost of materials $ 4450- 5000.
